Micfood signs cooperation agreement with the Faculty of Fisheries, Vietnam National University of Agriculture, to develop mitten crab farming
On 5/9/2025, Minh Phu International JSC (Micfood) and the Faculty of Fisheries of the Vietnam National University of Agriculture signed an agreement on scientific research and technology transfer for mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) farming. The partnership aims to connect academic expertise with real production, supporting research and the refinement of the market-size mitten crab farming process.

Connecting scientists and business around real needs
Developing a new farmed species takes more than seed stock and a market. Farmers also need to understand how the animal grows, what environmental conditions suit it and how to care for it to produce consistent quality.
With the mitten crab, these questions need especially close attention as farming rolls out in each area. From the same seed source, differences in water, pond bottom and husbandry can lead to different results. Observations in the pond are therefore an important basis for framing research questions and adjusting technique.

The link between Micfood and the Faculty of Fisheries, Vietnam National University of Agriculture, grew out of the need to bring research closer to production. The company brings problems from real farming; the scientists contribute expertise and research methods to find solutions together.
Working towards a complete process for market-size mitten crab
The cooperation covers scientific research and the transfer of mitten crab farming technology, with the aim of supporting commercial farming.
A process with practical value should help farmers understand exactly what to do at each stage — from pond preparation and seed selection to husbandry and quality assessment before harvest. It also needs a sound basis for adapting to the specific conditions of each farm.

Linking research with real farming is the approach needed to complete these elements step by step. Monitoring results in the pond verify whether a technique fits, while academic knowledge helps explain the problems that arise in production.

Supporting the move to ecological mitten crab farming
Micfood is developing an ecological mitten crab farming model that combines low stocking density with aquatic plants and pond environment management.

In this approach, product quality is tied to husbandry and to the crabs' living conditions. Farmers need to pay attention to water, feed, the pond bottom and the growth of the plants all at once, rather than only tracking crab size.
The academic partnership is expected to help the company keep refining how production is organised, evaluate the model on real-world evidence and pass technical knowledge on to farmers in a way that is easy to understand and apply.

Laying the foundation for the Micfood mitten crab chain
For Micfood, developing the mitten crab is not just about supplying seed or selling market-size crab. The company aims to connect every stage of the chain, from seed, feed and farming technique to the market.

The cooperation with the Faculty of Fisheries, Vietnam National University of Agriculture, is one step in building the expert foundation for that direction. The lasting value of the partnership lies in turning research into practical guidance that gives farmers a firmer basis for organising production.

Micfood looks forward to continuing to connect with farmers, cooperatives and interested organisations to discuss the conditions for rolling out the mitten crab model in a way that suits each locality.
