On 21/10/2026, at the headquarters of the Vietnam Academy of Fisheries Science (VAFIS), the leading fisheries research body, VAFIS and Minh Phu International JSC (MICFOOD) — the pioneer of a large-scale mitten crab value chain in Vietnam — signed a strategic cooperation agreement on artificial breeding research, commercial farming, commercialisation and technology transfer for mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis).

STRATEGIC COOPERATION SIGNING: TURNING THE AMBITION OF A SUSTAINABLE VIETNAMESE MITTEN CRAB INDUSTRY INTO REALITY

The event marks an important turning point, linking "scientists" and "business" to turn one of the most valuable specialty aquatic species into a new flagship sector of freshwater aquaculture.

Overview of the strategic cooperation signing between VAFIS and MICFOOD

Core areas of cooperation

  1. Artificial breeding research: Perfecting the technology for producing mitten crab seed in Vietnam, reducing dependence on wild-caught seed.
  2. Commercial farming and commercialisation: Expanding the ecological farming model and applying digital technology and high quality standards to farming and to commercialising the product.
  3. Technology transfer: Technical training, support for pond renovation and scaling up the partnership model to farmers and cooperatives nationwide.

Remarks and expectations from both sides

🌱 Dr Tran The Muu – Deputy Director, representing VAFIS emphasised the strategy of applying science and technology to native and new specialty species, and said that working with MICFOOD will take research results straight from the laboratory into production, delivering real value for the fisheries sector as a whole and for the mitten crab chain in particular.

🌱 Mr Tran Van Van – Representing MICFOOD reaffirmed the plan to develop the mitten crab value chain on a standardised model, and committed to working with VAFIS on transferring farming technology to make the mitten crab chain a high-value export sector.
