Mitten crab farming: high returns and a wide-open market
Agriculture and Environment Newspaper assesses the returns of a mitten crab farming model with a wide-open market.

MICFOOD's market-size mitten crab farming model in Hung Yen now covers 108 hectares, of which around 75 hectares are in commercial production. In 2025 output exceeded 30 tonnes, with prices of VND 600,000 – 700,000 per kg and a profit margin of around 35–40%.
According to Agriculture and Environment Newspaper, the mitten crab lives mainly on the bottom, so the pond environment must be kept clean. In MICFOOD's ponds, hornwort is planted over about 20–30% of the surface — giving the crabs shelter while they moult and providing an extra source of natural food.
The article also notes that supply of market-size mitten crab does not yet meet domestic demand. The company is exploring export opportunities in Asian markets such as Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia, where high-quality crab sells well. In the long term, a reliable seed supply and water-quality control remain the two key factors; MICFOOD is working with experts from China and a national aquaculture research institute to build domestic seed production and reduce dependence on imported larvae.
